Life Too Stressed? Christmas Losing Its Meaning? Want to Simplify Your Celebration?

Resources in SPANISH for Christmas, Easter & Weddings

Preparing for Christmas tends to be a time of stress. Try some peace this season with "Adviento." "Adviento" is the Spanish edition of "Whose Birthday Is It, Anyway?" - Alternatives' most widely read resource.

For 40 years, Alternatives has provided people with ideas to celebrate responsibly. Designed for individuals, families and small groups, "Adviento" also includes an Advent calendar.

All editions are available free of charge at SimpleLivingWorks.org >> Archives.

The booklet's calendar offers thoughts and actions for each day in Advent and the twelve days of Christmas to help people remember the reason we celebrate. The calendar is appropriate as a bulletin insert in Spanish or English. It may be copied royalty-free.

Many items are included in Spanish -- 40 day calendars for Lent, and "Advent" booklets of biblical reflections (including "10 Tips for a Simpler, More Meaningful Christmas" ["Adviento," panfletos de reflexiones biblicas (incluyendo "Diez consejos para una Navidad mas sencilla, pero con mas significado")].

Alternatives provides other resources appropriate for reevaluation of Christmas and for simpler living all year. Contact SimpleLivingWorks@yahoo.com. Visit SimpleLivingWorks.org.

"The average American wedding costs over $20,000," said Gerald Iversen, National Coordinator of Alternatives. "If you believe you can find value and meaning without going into debt, if you want a wedding filled with true family values, try 'Nuestra Boda,' [Wedding Alternatives] one of several resources produced in Spanish, as well as in English."

"Create a beautiful wedding that reflects your values and doesn't cost the Earth," Iversen said. "'Nuestra Boda' offers alternatives to engaged couples, clergy and others... alternatives to the bridal magazines and professional bridal consultants. 'Nuestra Boda' encourages couples to use their imaginations as they incorporate their values and family and ethnic traditions to plan meaningful wedding celebrations. It's a practical planning guide with personal stories from people who chose more than a status quo wedding."

This resource is available in Spanish, as well as English. Both editions are similar in content.

Simple Living Works! - successor to Alternatives - is an all-volunteer organization that continues the mission of "equipping people of faith to challenge consumerism, live justly, and celebrate responsibly." Started in 1973 as a protest against the commercialization of Christmas, it encourages celebrations year-round that reflect conscientious ways of living. For 40 years Alternatives has helped lead the movement to live more simply and faithfully. The many staff members and volunteers of Alternatives have developed a wide variety of resources and led numerous workshops. Alternatives emphasizes relationships and traditions over things, working to avoid stress and debt, and promoting alternative giving - helping the needy instead of spending so much on ourselves.

The web site offers free materials on simple living and related topics (such as hunger, the environment, media literacy, etc.) for Christmas and Easter, for weddings and for year-round use.

One needn't be a member to benefit. Contact Alternatives@SimpleLivingWorks.org. Visit SimpleLivingWorks.org. #####
