Why this Collection?

Throughout the years, stories and legends have been a large part of the Christmas season. Perhaps that is because they can offer a glimpse of the purpose of this celebration.

Much like our companion volumes, Christmas Reader and A Christmas Sampler, this collection of stories, poems, songs and reflections are meant to offer something other than the commercial hype our society offers at Christmas.

Those of you who have never heard of Clarence Jordan's Cotton Patch Gospels will find his passages on the birth of Jesus both new and familiar. Jordan, founder of the Koinonia Community in rural, southern Georgia, finds a unique setting for the gospel passages. Along with other Christmas stories, songs and poems, we have included a piece recounting the story of Hanukah, in hopes of promoting a better understanding of the Jewish holiday which coincides with our Christmas celebration. We have also included a Christmas reflection, "Sweet Little Jesus Boy," to encourage you to spend a few solitary moments considering the first Christmas story from a slightly different perspective.

Since we have enjoyed reading them throughout the years, we decided to share a few of the entries from our Best and Worst Christmas Gift Contest. They provide insightful and inspiring ideas for holiday gift giving.

We hope that you will find some time in this busy holiday season to share this collection with family and friends, in hopes of capturing the true meaning of Christmas.
