No Use Saying
A Gift for Grandpa

No Use Saying

It is no use saying that we are born two thousand years too late to give room to Christ. Nor will those who live at the end of the world have been born too late. Christ is always with us, always asking for room in our hearts.

But now it is with the voice of our contemporaries that He speaks, with the eyes of store clerks, factory workers, and children that he gazes; with the hands of office workers, slum dwellers, and suburban housewives that He gives. It is with the feet of soldiers and tramps that He walks, and with the heart of anyone in need that He longs for shelter. And giving shelter or food to anyone who asks for it, or needs it, is giving it to Christ...

A Gift for Grandpa

My grandfather died at the end of October during my sophomore year in college. That Christmas we were at my grandmother's house. After dinner we opened our gifts together. But there was one left under the tree, in an envelope, when we finished unwrapping. Grandmother asked me, the oldest grandchild, to open it. It contained a letter that began, "Dear Mrs. Mabel Frezieres,...and thanked her for her generous monetary gift in memory of her husband at Christmas.

After reading the letter from the charitable organization, she explained that this was Grandpa's Christmas gift and told us about the organization she gave to, what they do, and how they reach out to the world's needs with God's love.

Each year following that first Christmas after Grandpa died Grandma gives to a local charity with love and in memory of our grandfather and her beloved husband. It is an expression of eternal life through the promises of God in Jesus Christ. Forever Grandpa will be remembered in our hearts, and at Christmas his life and love will be celebrated in our family.
