Although an international organization, Alternatives also serves its region, called Siouxland, an area north of Omaha, Nebraska, and south of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. We publish an occasional newsletter of Social Justice activities called "Living More Simply That Others May Simply Live."

Handcrafted by Third World artisans around the globe. Help complete the circle of fair trade!

By selling their handicrafts, Ten Thousand Villages helps craftspeople provide food and education for their families and helps threatened villages survive. Ten Thousand Villages provides vital, fair incomes to Third World people by selling their handicrafts and telling their stories in North America.

Gardening and Adopt-a-Lot Project

Shalom is a neighborhood organization on the west side of Sioux City dedicated to improving the west side. Last year they gave away over $2000 worth of garden produce to various agencies and to the elderly. This spring and summer they will continue to raise garden produce on an acre on Military Road.

This year they are adding a new project called "Adopt-a-Lot." Various vacant lots will be beautified through mowing, and adding flowers or vegetables. We are recruiting neighbors and various organizations to adopt lot.

How can you help? We need volunteers. We need money to help purchase two roto-tillers.

The organizations involved in Shalom are Westside Action, Westside Coalition, Career Solution's, Inc., Goodwill, Immanuel Lutheran Church, Mayflower Congregational Church, St. Boniface Roman Catholic Church, Crescent Park United Methodist Church, Spirit of the Hills United Methodist Church, Apostolic Faith Tabernacle Church and Whitfield United Methodist Church, plus local neighbors.
