A Stable in Bethlehem: poem

Archives: Whose Birthday Is It, Anyway? #6

A Stable in Bethlehem: poem

Over a stable in Bethlehem,
the drowsy doves are cooing.
Snuggling in the golden hay,
the cows are softly mooing.
Shepherds wrapped in woolen robes
watch over their flocks by night.
The soft sheep are still awake
and see the star grow bright.
Guarding the sheep, the faithful dogs
are ever alert nearby.
The angels sing, "Hosanna!
Glory to God on high!"
From eastern lands camels come
with humps and shaggy fur.
Three wise men bring rich gifts of gold
and frankincense and myrrh.
Mary and Joseph look with tender love
upon a manger bed
at a small baby lying there
with straw pillowing his head.
The shepherds, the wise men,
and various animals all
have come to worship
the tiny babe in the stall.
While high in the sky
a star shines bright
to signal the birth
of the Christ Child this night.
