America's Plastic Jesus
I don't care if it rains or freezes,
'Long as I got my plastic Jesus,
Riding on the dashboard of my car.
In the '60's country western song, Plastic Jesus was a symbol of humor, even a bit of scorn about plastic religion.
America has another plastic Jesus -- Christmas credit card debt.
The Center for a New American Dream says that it takes four months for an average American household to pay off its Christmas credit card debt. 40% of card holders can't pay off their year-round debt.
No wonder we don't worry much about our national debt -- the attitude of our country's leadership is no different than most of our people.
Our national economy "lives" on debt. Debt is the enforcer of overconsumption. It is the mobster that keeps people overworking all their adult years.
Overconsumption is killing our planet. Let's love mother Earth by avoiding debt.
- Don't let peer pressure and advertising lead to over consumption. We are not responsible to provide profits to Big Business, often misnamed "the economy." The Earth is our real source of natural capital, which we cannot afford to squander. Our economy must be based on natural, renewal, biological models, not the extractive system we have used for too long.
- Use a debit card, not a debt card (misnamed "credit" card).
- Save for Christmas and spend only what you're able to save. If necessary, keep cash in a hidden special envelop.
