Whose Birthday Is It, Anyway? (all years)
What Shall We Tell the Folks?
What will our extended family and friends say if we propose changing some of the. ways we give at Christmas? The following are excerpts from an actual letter one family composed. Perhaps it will give you some ideas.
Dear Family,
Over the past few years, we have discovered that Christmas has become a time to "get through" rather than a time to savor and appreciate. Of course, the seasonal contacts with all of, you-whether by telephone, in person, or through an exchange of gifts always bring us joy. When the season comes to a close, though, we can't help but wonder if our mode of celebration pleases God and reflects the real significance of Christmas.
In most cases, none of us are truly in need of material things, but our spiritual lives may be less full than they could be. One way to enrich our spiritual lives is to extend a helping hand to those in need. As your gift to us in this coming Christmas, would you consider making a gift of your time, your talent, or your money to someone or some group that could use our help. In return, we propose to make a similar gift to you. We would welcome your thoughts on what we might give which would be meaningful to you.
We recognize that there is something special in sharing tangible gifts. Therefore, in addition to sharing with those in need, we think exchanging inexpensive purchased items or products of our own labor is appropriate and certainly within the spirit of Christmas. We recognize, of course, that young children should not be expected to participate.
Please think about the subject for a while and let us have your reactions and suggestions, even if you've completed your shopping.
We love you all dearly and will respect whatever you decide to do. Our major concern is that we re-focus our efforts towards a more meaningful celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ.
