Local Media Contact / Activist
Yes, you can make a difference on the MEDIA in your community!
As Alternatives produces more resources electronically — videos, DVDs and audio CDs, you have the opportunity to get the message of simpler living on stations in your community.
1. Contact your local CABLE company about carrying our videos Break Forth into Joy!; Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas; The Celebration Revolution of ALexander Scrooge; & Simply Enough: Straight Talk from Tony and Shane About Simple, Just Living on the community access channel. This is normally free. Then help the cable company promote the broadcasts (when times are firm) to attract more viewers by including a blurb in your church and other newsletters or letters to the editor(s) of your community newspaper(s). You provide the DVD.
2. Contact your commercial and public, secular and religious RADIO stations about carrying our audio programming. You can help by trying to find “underwriters” or “sponsors.” Help promote the broadcasts (when times are set) to attract more listeners by including a blurb in your church and other newsletters or letter(s) to the editor(s) of your community newspaper(s). We will provide CDs.
- “Carols with Justice” (15 vocals)
- “Whose Birthday Is It, Anyway?” (six 28-minute programs)
- “More-with-Less Christmas” (thirty 90-second spots)
- Demos of both programs come on “Whose Birthday” audio CDs. Or listen to the MP3 files on our web site. (MP3 files require a player, such as Real Player or Quick Time Player, which now comes as part of most browsers, but not Windows Media Player. If you don’t have a player, one’s available free at <http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/> or <www.real.com>.)

- Urge friends as relatives to shares articles in email and forward the SLW! eNews to their contact list.
- Urge your congregation (and others too!) to include articles in its newsletter.
How to Help Volunteers Promote “Whose Birthday?” Radio Shows
Program MP3s are uploaded to SLW! site for stations and customers to download. Programs will be provided on CDs via mail only if necessary. Staff promotes series in eNews.
How SLOW Downers Can Solicit Help from Radio and CableStations
You know your community better than we do, so we’re asking you to select the commercial and public, religious and secular stations to approach.
Please do not be insulted if they express no interest. This is not about you. When you find a station that is interested – one that, after hearing the demos on our website, will at least give you a strong “maybe” – contact Alternatives. The staff will contact them directly.
If you have a community, regional or company webcasting service, ask the Program Director to preview both the audio CD and video for webcast.
The message of voluntary simplicity is so powerful and so needed that your efforts will be well worth your time and energy. Do not have high expectations. Be friendly but persistent. Be enthusiastic!
If we do nothing, be assured that nothing will happen. WE are God’s hands on Earth.
Phone or Face-to-Face SCRIPT
1. [Introduction] Hello. May I speak to the manager/program director. This is __________. I’m a volunteer with Simple Living Works! - a 35-year-old national non-profit organization that helps people to reduce stress and debt and to build stronger family bonds, especially at Christmas time. (By the way,) this is not a call asking for money.
- “More-with-Less Christmas” will appeal especially to women who want to escape the stress of Christmas.
- “Whose Birthday Is It, Anyway?” will appeal to Christians who want to help their family focus on Jesus’ birth.
- We have videos for Christmaas time and year-round.
- [If interested, follow-up within a week and report to us.]
3. Alternatives has produced a magazine for families at Christmas time for 25 years. Now it’s available in two series of radio programs. I’m hoping you’d be willing to consider carrying it this year during December. It comes in two versions: “More-with-Less Christmas” is a series of 30 90-second spots designed for weekdays. “Whose Birthday Is it, Anyway?” is a series of six 28-minutes programs designed for weekends.
The programs are free and available for sponsorship, especially by local churches. (I have a list of prospective sponsors. I have a list of churches and other groups that are willing to promote the broadcasts.)
If you are in a position to consider it, I’d urge you to listen to the demo at SimpleLivingWorks.org >> Archives >> Audio. If you can't consider these shows, who might I contact who makes these decisions?
4. [CLOSE.] Do you have any other questions, comments? [Take notes for staff.]
Are you willing to help?
- listen to/view the demos?
- broadcast one or both programs?
Thank you. Good-bye.
[If they express interest, follow-up within a week and report to us. Thanks!]
