SUBMISSIONS WELCOME FOR "WHOSE BIRTHDAY" 2003
If you would like to contribute to next year's edition of our most
widely-read, family-oriented booklet, "Whose Birthday Is It, Anyway?"
please send ideas by January 15th. Prepare something during the holiday
season when it's really on your mind. An item may be new or not, original
or not. If it's by someone else, include a complete description of the
source.
We can use...
** Art (line drawing, photo) that depicts the tension between faith
and culture.
** Personal experiences (especially intergenerational ones) related
to simplifying Christmas or finding meaning in relationships instead of
stuff.
** Ideas for worshipful ceremonies or family rituals and activities.
We print about 100,000 copies and reach many more through our
website. We intend to translate much of it into Spanish. Lead writer is Lou
Lotz, who has contributed articles in past editions. Articles and art have
been picked by other national publications.

The Cosmic Dance
An Invitation to Experience Our Oneness
Joyce Rupp; art by Mary Southard
The best-selling author of May I have This Dance? Joins with the artist of
the Earth Calendar to create an inspiring book that will sing in your soul
and make you feel alive!
Through powerful prose and poetry, Joyce Rupp makes it easy for us to
experience our unity with each other and all of life. She calls us to live
compassionately with each person and particle of creation. She challenges
us to hear the pain of the planet and to care for the Earth and all its
inhabitants. Most of all, she draws us to fuller enjoyment and appreciation
of life and its unbreakable goodness in ourselves and in everyone and
everything around us.
Beautiful full-color art by Mary Southard stirs our souls with feelings of
awe, gratitude, and love. The Cosmic Dance is a melody that each of us is
dimly aware of; after experiencing the truths in this book, we will hear it
sing.

To get the job done right, use the right tools.
For almost 30 years, Alternatives has been supplying the right tools for a
very important job. Tools for personal growth. Educational tools like books
and videos.
Tools to share the message of simpler living with others, even if, like
most of us, you're timid about telling other people how to live. Tools like
greeting cards and bumper stickers and bulletin inserts. Alternatives'
tools are inexpensive and simple.
As we North Americans foul air and water faster than the Earth can restore
it -- as we use far more than our fair share of the Earth's resources --
simpler living is crucial now for future generations of God's creatures.
Alternatives is operated by a small, committed staff. Our whole operation
is lean and frugal. We authentically attempt to embrace the message we
espouse every day.
Donations of any size are welcome and are tax deductible. If you share $100
or more, we will gladly send you a free copy of our new "Simply the Best:
30 Years of Alternatives" -- the bulk of our work all on one CD-ROM --
to
use yourself and to share with others.
Please let us hear from you soon by phone or mail. Or simply pledge by
replying to this email and we'll send you an invoice and return envelop.
Peace.
Gerald Iversen, National Coordinator
P.S. Things are tough here financially. That's not a surprise, since we
are promoting a message that may seem easy to agree with but flies in the
face of North American consumerism. This is a great time to express your
generous commitment to our common vision.

Here are a few of the many encouraging words people have shared with us
recently...
Thank you for being here and affirming the ideas and values I believe in,
that seem to be so "unpopular" in my community. I am so encouraged
by your
web site!
God's Peace, Rachael Seavey
I enjoy the influence Alternatives has made on my life and enjoy reading
the materials I have received. My husband is handicapped and I am his
primary caregiver. Alternatives has helped me to be at peace with our
simple lifestyle. I find great joy in having learned to let go of
ownership to earthly possessions and delight in the gifts with which God
has so abundantly blessed us: family, friends, nature, etc.
Leslye Korvola, Fairbanks, AK
My husband and I have been involved in Alternatives since the 1970s. You've
made a big difference in a lot of lives, including ours, and we thank you!
Marti Martin, Fairfax, VA

How are we going to celebrate Christmas this year?
What is really most meaningful?
Who's going to do what?
Are we willing to spend less on ourselves and help the needy? Ask questions
like these. At a family meeting write down your decisions. Then post them.
At Christmas time so many peoples' brains seem to get disconnected. For
whatever reason -- habit, family pressure, guilt about being a bad Dad,
whatever -- people put themselves through incredible stress and end up in
big debt.
Instead of assuming that everything will be just the same this year and
that everybody will be happy about it, talk to those who will be involved.
Instead of gritting your teeth when you see Christmas decorations going up
before Halloween, sit down with your family, contact your relatives and
friends -- those you normally celebrate with -- and talk.
Talk about what each of you really wants at Christmas, talk about
expectations, talk about who is going to do what. Maybe the person --
usually Mom -- who is assumed to do most of the work, wants more help.
Maybe there's something else that folks really want to do but are afraid to
rock the boat. Their humble idea may become a great new family tradition.
Write down your ideas and post your plan in a central place, whether your
celebration is religious or secular.
Mark your calendar for your own "Let's Talk About Christmas!" Day.
Beat the
rush after Thanksgiving. Talk early. Contact Alternatives for a "Let's
Talk
About Christmas!" planner, part of Alternatives' Christmas Campaign Kit.
It can be hard sharing feelings and ideas about simplifying Christmas when
friends and family don't 'get it.' Our Christmas Campaign Kit helps to urge
others to focus at Christmas on traditions and relationships instead of
stuff.
All 15 items, a $15+ value, is only $10.

This Christmas SEND A MESSAGE about Simpler Living!
Alternatives' Fall Resource Guide Has Help for You.
Sending a message to others about North America's need to live more simply
can be tricky. Folks who do not understand the global impact of North
American overconsumption may be unaware, be in denial or may just not know
their options.
Alternatives three-fold mission is to equip people 1) to challenge
consumerism, 2) to live justly and 3) to celebrate responsibly. We do that
through resources and services.
Two of our services are an extensive website and a nation-wide volunteer
bureau of speakers and workshop leaders. Our website includes hundreds of
articles for personal inspiration and for use by editors in paper and
electronic publications. To access that information, visit
http://SimpleLiving.org/Archives/index.html
Our Fall Resource Guide includes many ways to Send a Message -- greeting
cards, bumper stickers and posters, as well as books and videos.
Alternative Giving cards announce that you have honored someone by giving a
contribution to a worthwhile charity in their name instead of buying them a
mass-produced item.
If you find a title you would like to give to several people, we offer a
10% discount (by request) when you buy five or more copies of the same
title.
Share Alternatives' free Resource Guide or "Whose Birthday" flyer
with
others at meetings, conferences, etc. The guide contains many new
resources, as well as established works on simpler living for children and
adults. Call 800-821-6153 anytime for free copies.

A family treasury of stories, prayers, and blessings from around world
Aaron Zerah
Great stories are an especially enjoyable and effective way of
connecting our family not only to our own spiritual traditions but to the
time-tested wisdom of all the world's peoples.
Each of the 52 weeks contains a story to share, a way of sharing it
effectively and enjoyably, questions and activities for enrichment, plus
a
meal blessing and a family prayer that carry out the theme of the week.
And because the stories are not seasonal you can begin at any time.

"Beatrice's Goat is a heartwarming reminder that families, wherever
they live, can change their lives for the better." --Hillary Rodham Clinton
Ages 4-8. More than anything, Beatrice longs to be a schoolgirl.
But in her small African village only children who can afford uniforms and
books can go to school. Beatrice knows that with six children to care for,
her family is much too poor.
But then Beatrice receives a wonderful gift from some people far
away - a goat! Fat and sleek as a ripe mango, Mugisa (which means "luck")
gives milk that Beatrice can sell. With Mugisa's help, it looks as if
Beatrice's dream may come true after all.

People throughout North America seem really hungry for information about living more simply. Our hope is that people can learn ways to simplify their lives so that they are not overtaken by stress, debt and guilt. Our SLOw Down Network offers help.
We provide tools for simplifying, such as books and videos. But the best motivation to change comes through face-to-face sharing, education, support and accountability. That's how volunteer empowerment happens.

Christmas preparations have begun! Have yours?
Without realizing it, people you serve began preparing for another COMMERCIALIZED Christmas last December 26th. Now's the time to begin planning a simpler, alternative celebration.
We will help you.
Your Group Can Benefit from Customized Copies of "Whose Birthday Is It, Anyway?"
This booklet is Alternatives' most widely read resource.
The featured writers for 2002 are Jim and Kathy McGinnis, founders and co-directors of the Institute for Peace and Justice, and the Peaceful Parenting Network.
Designed for families and small groups, "Whose Birthday...?" can be used in many settings -- at home, school, church. The content is new each year but the message is the same -- to equip people of faith to resist the pressures of a commercialized Christmas and to help them celebrate this season with greater integrity. As in the past, it contains new Biblical reflections, articles, activities and ideas for alternative giving.
This resource is so well received, contains such valuable material and yet costs so little. We normally produce some 25 customized versions of "Whose Birthday...?" for various denominations and dioceses. We can produce one for an organization, group, single congregation or others.
You have three pages inside to promote alternative giving and events in your area. Plus your name goes on the front and back covers. Alternatives provides free editorial help and promotion materials.
Reservations are due by July 25th for early September delivery. This is the only printing remaining. Minimum order for customization is 1000 copies.
Ecumenical, national catholic and denominational versions are now in stock.

Editor: This release is available on-line at:
Preparing for Christmas tends to be a time of stress. Try some peace this season with the 2002 edition of "Whose Birthday Is It, Anyway?" from Alternatives for Simple Living.
For over fifteen years, Alternatives has provided people with ideas to celebrate responsibly in this Advent-Christmas resource booklet. This is Alternatives' most widely read resource. Over two million copies have been circulated.
The all new year 2002 edition features well-known speakers and authors Jim and Kathy McGinnis. Designed for individuals, families and small groups, the booklet includes biblical reflections, worshipful ceremonies, activities, an Advent calendar and suggestions for remembering the needy.
"Whose Birthday Is It, Anyway?" is available now in quantity pricing as low as 70¢ per copy. Also available is a version of the booklet in Spanish entitled "Adviento."
The seven reflections can be read quietly or aloud for private or group meditation. JIM and KATHY MCGINNIS are founders and co-directors of the Institute for Peace and Justice and of the Parenting for Peace and Justice Network. They are active workshop leaders and authors of more than a dozen books and audio-visual programs.
Articles present meaningful Christmas alternatives and worship aids. The booklet's calendar - "A Simple Christmas" - offers thoughts and actions for each day in Advent and the twelve days of Christmas. The calendar is also available as bulletin inserts in English or Spanish.
Single copies of the booklet are $3 each postpaid; 5-19 copies, $2 each; 20-49 copies, $1.50 each; 50-299 copies, $1 each; 300-999 copies, 85¢ each; 1000+ copies, 70¢ each. Shipping charges are added above four copies.

New Bilingual Title!
A CAFECITO STORY: A Story for the Americas
Julia Alvarez; woodcuts by Belkis Ramireez
In North America, coffee is the morning lifeline between waking and working. In Central and South America, coffee is an economic lifeline, after oil the most important export commodity. Especially when coffee is grown sustainably, it links the first and third worlds in ways that are surprising and often delightful.
The story unfolds through the eyes of Joe, a man with farming in his blood but an increasing sense of displacement from the natural world. While on holiday in the Dominican Republic, Joe learns about how coffee is grown and traded from Miguel, a Dominican coffee farmer. It is from Miguel and the other campesinos that Joe comes to understand the role of coffee in global trade, environmental degradation, and endangered songbird habitat.
Initially overwhelmed, Joe eventually learns to live compatibly with the natural world. Human communication, in the form of the written word, the spoken word, and the shared cup of coffee gives him the power to face life's challenges one cup at a time. 50 pp. $9. CAFECITO
To see the cover, visit http://simpleliving.org/catalog/Food.html
FAIRLY TRADED COFFEE & TEA
Caffeine is the most common chemical addiction in North America.
Alternatives does not promote the use of coffee because it has no nutritional or medicinal value.
When people of good will drink it for social value, they can "drink with their conscience" by supporting small farming co-ops rather than multinational corporations. In the interest of Fair Trade, we offer organic gourmet coffee and tea from Equal Exchange, the company profiled in The Cafecito Story.

Responsible Purchasing Guide for Faith Communities
Faith-based organizations around the country are learning to buy differently for their houses of worship through the Center for a New American Dream's new resource, "Responsible Purchasing Guide for Faith Communities." The guide outlines eight easy steps congregations can take to protect the Earth and promote social justice. Responsible Purchasing gives step by step information about how to buy environmentally friendly and socially responsible products like coffee, paper, and cleaning products and provides information about how to calculate the positive impact of these actions. For more information or to receive copies ($5 each) for your faith group, email cassandra@newdream.org or call 877-68-DREAM.

COTTON PATCH PARABLES OF LIBERATION
Clarence Jordan and Bill Lane Doulos
Jordan and Doulos move beyond glib words and familiar interpretations to
discover crucial meaning for today. Jesus' parables reveal that religion,
wealth, and culture tend to imprison us. Strong with the flavor of the south,
Jordan's version of the parables is intertwined with incisive comments from
his lectures, sermons, and writings. Doulos provides challenging observations.
They call us to true discipleship, to explore the demands of membership in
God's kingdom. These are life-changing insights for those who would be faithful.

"People without guns injure people. People with guns kill them."
This video introduces people who are working against gun violence and offers suggestions for responding from a faith perspective.
Josh Sugarmann of the Violence Policy Center in Washington, DC, studies the statistics, defines the issue, and offers solutions. He says, "People who buy handguns, usually for self-defense, end up using them against their friends and family in arguments."
Felix Sparks, a hunter and former Colorado Supreme Court justice and military commander, shares the pain of losing a 16-year-old grandson in a drive-by shooting. Forming PUNCH (People United, No Children's Handguns) was Sparks' way to deal with his own grief. "We can't bring back any of our children who were killed but we feel that if we can save one or two lives a year, then we have accomplished something."
Father Marshall Gourley, parish priest of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Denver, Colorado, states grimly, "Kids and guns: I bury on the average about one a month and have been doing that for several years."
Another teenager killed by guns was the son of Ana and Jim Chavez. Ana says, "We know that we have to do something in the community to correct (gun violence). Otherwise, we would be burying another son."

Boys Will Be Men
Paul Kivel
Drawing on his decades of experience as a social activist and his anti-violence work with men and teens, Kivel helps parents and educators grapple with the complex forces in our sons' lives, including racism, homophobia, pornography, drugs, class, consumerism, sex, and violence. He then provides practical tools to empower boys to take the courageous step out of the "act like a man" box to become allies to themselves, each other, and all those who are vulnerable to violence and injustice in our society.
A powerful vision of raising our sons to be the critically thinking, socially-invested men we need for a multicultural and democratic society.

George Beukema; Foreword by Jim Wallis, editor of Sojourners magazine and convener of Call to Renewal
Beukema lets urban life breathe and when necessary, bleed. His stories feel almost casual, a quality that makes it possible to live inside them. But the surprise is how poignant they are. Things are turned upside down. Who are the benefactors to whom? Who is the richer, and who the poorer? Here is a genuinely bridging book! 112 pp. $10. SBPL

World trade was once the exclusive preserve of big business, run by transnational

Offers Many Resources at Reduced Prices
To make room for new titles, we are offering many quality books for children and adults at a discount, some for the last time.
To conserve paper, we limit the number of titles we offer and the number of catalogs we print. More and more of our orders are coming from our web site.
We consider our resources to be tools. We do much more than sell books, videos and other educational resources. We offer tools to change lives for the better.
The three steps of Simpler Living (and social change) are: changing ourselves, sharing with others, and changing the system. Influencing others begins with ourselves!
In addition to our free quarterly Resource Guide, Alternatives has an extensive web site offering hundreds of inspiring articles for individuals and editors to use. Also we have a North American network of over 800 volunteers ready to give talks, workshops, help organize events and simplicity circles and study/action groups.
Voluntary simplicity is far more than frugality. It is a life of integrity. We deal with some 15 related topics, including media literacy, world hunger, building community and celebrating, peace and justice, care of Creation, transportation and eco-tourism, homes and buildings, organic agriculture, alternative giving (donations and volunteerism), economics, food and self-care, and spirituality. We offer tools for each of these areas. We encourage people to get only the tools they need. Alternatives serves everyone.

During April 22-28, 2002, MILLIONS of students in THOUSANDS of school will join parents, teachers, doctors and more in TV-TURNOFF WEEK 2002! Instead of watching the tube, they will read, exercise, visit with family and friends, invest time in their communities, and have some real life fun!
Why Break Free?
American children watch about three hours of television every day. Each year, they spend more time in front of the TV screen than they spend in school. Numerous sources, including the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), the U.S. Surgeon General, and the American Academy of Pediatrics have linked our national television habit to poor reading scores, an epidemic of obesity and associated illnesses, and less time with family and friends.
Reading and academic achievement are particularly hard hit by TV time. The 2000 NAEP reported that students who watch the most television earn the lowest scores on reading proficiency tests.
For the most part, the TV issue boils down to one crucial factor: TIME. Developing literacy skills requires both practice time and a supportive environment. Students who spend the bulk of their free time in front of the tube lack necessary practice time and vocabulary-building reading experience, and they may also fail to develop the genuine interest in books that can lead to a lifetime of reading.
How Can We Break Free of TV?
TV-Turnoff Network is a national nonprofit organization that encourages children and adults to watch much less television in order to promote healthier lives and communities. In addition to TV-Turnoff Week we run RealVision, our education initiative, and More Reading, Less TV.
TV-Turnoff Week 2002 Organizer's Kit ($15) includes two TV-Turnoff Network
Publications with fact sheets, pledge cards, a step-by-step guide to running a TV-Turnoff, as well as three TV-Turnoff Week 2002 Posters, & three bumper stickers!
Each year, millions of children and adults across the nation choose to spend seven days without TV, during TV-Turnoff Week. Instead, they read, exercise, explore new activities, and spend time with family and friends.
TV-Turnoff Week 2002 is the eighth annual TV-Turnoff, and this year's event is supported by more than 70 national organizations including the American Medical Association, National Education Association, and International Reading Association. TV-Turnoff Week events occur in schools, churches, libraries, community groups, businesses, and homes all over the country.
All you need is an Organizer's Kit and a good sense of fun!

Without realizing it, people you serve began preparing for another commercialized Christmas last December 26th. Now's the time to begin planning a simpler, alternative celebration.
We will help you. Contact us today.
Your Group Can Benefit from Customized Copies of "Whose Birthday Is It, Anyway?"
Orders are now being accepted for customized copies of the 15th edition of "Whose Birthday Is It, Anyway?" for Advent 2002.
As in the past, it contains Biblical reflections, articles, activities and ideas for alternative giving.
This resource is so well received, contains such valuable material and yet costs so little. We normally produce some 25 customized versions of "Whose Birthday...?" for various denominations and dioceses. We can produce one for a group, a single congregation or others.
Sponsors have three pages inside and their name on the front and back covers. Alternatives provides free editorial help and promotion materials.
Copy is requested March 15th for June 1st delivery. Reservations are requested by August 15th for November 1st delivery. Minimum order for customization is 1000 copies.
Ecumenical, national catholic and denominational versions will be in stock June 1st.

It's a powerful blend of articles on a theme plus reporting of activities from Central Coast California -- which gives a good sense of what regional activism can be.

Martin Luther King Day is observed Monday, January 21st.
James T. de Kay
(Grades 4 & up) When Martin Luther King, Jr., was growing up, he wasn't allowed to use the water fountains the white children drank from - and he didn't understand why. As he grew older, he studied hard and practiced speaking to large groups. He marched and petitioned to change laws that separated blacks from whites. As the leader of America's civil rights movement, he inspired, and continues to inspire, millions of people to help change this country for the better. 105 pp. $4. MMLK
February is Black History Month.
Andrea Davis Pinkney; Stephen Alcorn, illus.
(All ages) When Rosa Park refused to give up her seat on a bus, she sparked a protest that changed America. Having escaped slavery on the Underground railroad, Harriet Tubman defied bounty hunters and returned to the South again and again to lead slaves to freedom. As the first black woman elected to the US House of Representatives, Shirley Chisholm paved the way for generations of women to enter government.
The lives of these women are part of one incredible story. It's a story about courage in the face of inequality, oppression, prejudice, and fear... about the challenges and triumphs of the battle for civil rights... about speaking out for what you believe, even when it feels like no one is listening. The ten freedom fighters featured in this book let their lights shine on the darkness of discrimination. And shine they did.

Living Simply: Studies in Learning to Live as Jesus Did
Murray Sheard
Simplicity is a discipline practiced by many down the ages who seek to follow Jesus' own style of life. To mouth the words of Jesus is religious -- to act on them is revolutionary.
This book challenges your study group to confront the accelerating pace of life, the ecological threat and uneven global development. It will challenge each member to ask important questions about their lifestyle. 45 pp. $5. LS

If you would like to contribute to the 2002 edition of our most widely-read, family-oriented booklet, "Whose Birthday Is It, Anyway?" please send ideas by January 15th. Prepare something during the holiday season when it's really on your mind. An item may be new or not, original or not. If it's by someone else, include a complete description of the source.
We can use...
We print about 150,000 copies and reach many more through our website. We intend to translate much of it into Spanish. Lead writers are Jim and Kathy McGinnis of the Peace and Justice Institute, St. Louis.
The article by volunteer Christine Leonard Osterwalder in the 2000 edition was picked by "Horizon," the national women's magazine of the Presbyterian Church (USA). The cover photo by volunteer Phil Claeys, "Prayerful Santa," was carried on the United Methodist News Service website and was reproduced in dozens of publications.

The classic "Simply Organized" has been withdrawn by the publisher. We listed it in the Winter Resource Guide because the publisher said it was going to be reprinted. Sorry, it is not available.

Art's tricky. Each year we try to portray visually the tension between faith and culture to help people question the way we celebrate Christmas. Sometimes the point is obvious. Sometimes a caption for subtle art helps to focus the reader's mind.
The cover of "Whose Birthday Is it, Anyway?" for 2000 - Santa kneeling at the manger - provoked interesting, thoughtful responses. Some excerpts appear in the 2001 edition, plus a new piece of art.
This "contest" makes a good discussion starter - at home, at church, at work.
Use it and then tell us the results by February 15th. Your response can be as short or as long as you choose. Or write a caption for the picture. We will publish selected submissions.
Both the previous year's and the current art appear in "Whose Birthday Is It, Anyway?" which is still available.
Scheduled for 2003 is a collection called "Worship Alternatives."
For submission guidelines, contact us. The collection will focus on discipleship as seen through our mission.
Worship Alternatives is available for sponsorship/underwriting. We intend to publish the collection on paper (loose leaf format for easy use) and on CD-ROM (both Mac & PC on one disk).
The project was highly rated in a recent survey of Alternatives' customers, members and volunteers.
To meet the scheduled release date, $5000 is needed for production and some marketing.
Recognition of the sponsors normally includes credits in the collection itself and in the extensive national marketing campaign, but is negotiable.
Sponsorship is a contribution to Alternatives, a nonprofit organization, and is therefore tax deductible. We welcome sponsorships of $1000 or more.
Donations of any size are welcome.
