THE PLUG-IN DRUG
Television, Computers, and Family Life: 25th Anniversary Edition -
Completely Revised and Updated
Marie Winn's landmark book about how children get hooked on TV
Are Your Kids Watching Instead of Living? This classic study of television's
impact on children and family life, now includes computers in the classroom, video games, and the VCR. It provides powerful evidence of
television's negative effects on children's play, imagination, family relations,
and school achievement. By shifting the focus from the TV programs kids watch
to how much they watch, and why, and what they are missing as a result, it details
how parents lose control of this powerful medium and then shows how some regain
it, even after many years.
Based on interviews with hundreds of families, teachers, and child specialists.
New research, with additional sections on electronic toys, TV for babies, and control devices. Its message is more vital now than ever.

Journaling is an important activity for ourselves and for building
relationships with others. Daily journaling helps us sort out our problems
and grow our inspirations. It also helps us create wisdom to pass along to
others, especially children and grandchildren.
Guided journals contain a thought for the day to inspire us and help us to
start writing.
Alternatives offers new journaling options on recycled paper. Each contains

SEND A MESSAGE about Simpler Living!
Alternatives' "Simpler Living" Fall Resource Guide Has Help for You.
Sending a message to others about North America's need to live more simply
can be tricky. Folks who do not understand the global impact of North
American overconsumption may be unaware, be in denial or may just not know
their options.
Alternatives three-fold mission is to equip people 1) to challenge
consumerism, 2) to live justly and 3) to celebrate responsibly. We do that
through resources and services.
Two of our services are an extensive website and a nation-wide volunteer
bureau of speakers and workshop leaders. Our website includes hundreds of
articles for personal inspiration and for use by editors in paper and
electronic publications. To access that information, visit
http://SimpleLiving.org/Archives/index.html
Our Fall Resource Guide includes many ways to Send a Message -- greeting
cards, bumper stickers and posters, as well as books, videos and CDs.
If you find a title you would like to give to several people, we offer a
10% discount (by request) when you buy five or more copies of the same
title.
Share Alternatives' free Resource Guide or "Whose Birthday" flyer
with
others at meetings, conferences, etc. The guide contains many new
resources, as well as established works on simpler living for children and
adults. Call 800-821-6153 anytime for free copies.

RABBLE ROUSERS
20 Women Who Made a Difference
Cheryl Harness
(Ages 7-11) 20 women who dared to change the world! Spurred by misery and
unfairness, they wanted to rouse the people, to wake them up to what they
didn't see. They wanted to remake, re-educate, redeem, and reform. Each
of these women spoke out loud her personal vision of a nation in which the
powerless would have an equal chance at "Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit
of
Happiness."
Their methods landed them in trouble, sometimes even in jail. People
called them unladylike, dangerous, and crazy. But all of them persevered,
and each on made a difference in the freedoms men and women enjoy today.
Starting with Ann Lee, founder of the Shaker community, who fought for
religious choice, and ending with Doris "Granny D" Haddock, a 92-year-old
champion of campaign reform, Rabble Rousers spans over 200 years of
American history and covers such important social movements as abolition,
woman suffrage, labor and civil rights. The spirited profiles of these
fascinating, fiery women will inspire readers to stand up for their own
beliefs.

Here are some of your responses.
I'd also suggest we include prayers for: the death of peace with the start
of the war, the death of the thousands of Iraqi (mostly civilians), and the
unnecessary deaths of our own troops. --William R. "Bill" Peterson,
Sioux
City, IA
I really liked your comments about praying for concientious objectors and
not just "for our troops." My husband says, lets also pray for "our
enemies" instead of just for our troops! Blessings, Vickie B. Wangberg

Without realizing it, people you serve began preparing for another
commercialized Christmas last December 26th. Now's the time to begin
planning a simpler, alternative celebration.
We will help you. Contact us today.
Your group can benefit from customized copies of "Whose Birthday Is It,
Anyway?"
Place your order now in any quantity for the 16th edition of "Whose
Birthday Is It, Anyway?" for Advent 2003. This booklet is Alternatives'
most widely read resource. Over two million copies have been distributed.
The featured writer for 2003 is Louis Lotz, Grand Rapids, Michigan, a
widely published, award-winning author and columnist.
Designed for families and small groups, "Whose Birthday...?" can
be used in
many settings -- at home, school, church. The content is new each year but
the message is the same -- to equip people of faith to resist the pressures
of a commercialized Christmas and to help them celebrate this season with
greater integrity. As in the past, it contains Biblical reflections,
articles, a daily calendar, activities and ideas for alternative giving.
This resource is so well received, contains such valuable material and yet
costs so little. We normally produce some 20 customized versions of "Whose
Birthday...?" for various denominations and dioceses. We can also produce
one for a group, a single congregation or others.
Partners have three pages inside and their name on the front and back
covers. Alternatives provides free editorial help and promotion materials.
We offer color on your pages and mail expediting. We'll be glad to give you
details on the phone.
Reservations are requested by August 15th for November 1st delivery.
Minimum order for customization is 1000 copies at $.70 each.
Ecumenical, national catholic and most denominational versions are in stock
now so that they can be distributed during summer events.

HOW MUCH IS ENOUGH?
Hungering for God in an Affluent Culture
Arthur Simon, founder and president emeritus of Bread for the World and
author of The Politics of World Hunger, Bread for the World and Grace at
the Table: Ending Hunger in God's World.
Why, in the face of unprecedented affluence, do so many of us feel
discontented? Because possessions may capture the heart, but they fail to
nourish the soul.
Simon challenges readers to realize that our passion for material things
far exceeds our compassion for others. This materialism leads to a
spiritual emptiness that can't be filled by the addiction of consumerism.
None of us is immune to the seduction of trying to slake what is really a
spiritual thirst with things that money can buy, though doing so is like
drinking saltwater from the sea.

FAITH WORKS
Lessons from the Life of an Activist Preacher
Jim Wallis
Today more than ever, many people are hungry for spirituality and
community. But the most powerful and meaningful spirituality shows itself
through action. Jim Wallis is the charismatic preacher, activist, and
leader of Call to Renewal, a dynamic new movement that is uniting politics
and spirituality to ignite social change and overcome poverty. In his
timely, exciting new book, he shows us how we can enrich our own lives by
serving our communities. Wallis believes that the making of the modern
Christian, Muslim, or Jew is through action. A preacher who spends his time
working for justice rather than just speaking from a pulpit, Wallis
compellingly demonstrates how going out and putting your belief to work is
what really counts. Faith shows itself in works - faith works.

SHOWDOWN AT THE FCC JUNE 2nd!
"Media Literacy" is one of Alternatives' 15 issues.
Friday night on PBS' "NOW!" Bill Moyers interviewed Federal Communications
Commissioner Michael J. Copps. He is greatly concerned that changes
scheduled for a vote June 2nd will drastically change who owns OUR public
air waves. These changes will greatly harm our ability to have the
information we need to run our democracy. (To read what he says or to
express your opinion to the commissioners, visit www.fcc.gov) We must not
let these plans go through without more public deabte. THESE CHANGES ARE
PRACTICALLY IRREVERSIBLE. Being properly informed and educated is a peace &
justice issue.

MEDIA RELEASE
National Figures Help Alternatives Celebrate 30 Years!
Ten well known national figures will serve on the Honorary Board of
Directors to help Alternatives for Simple Living celebrate its 30th
Anniversary.
"We are also issuing several new resources, updating our web site and
establishing an endowment fund," said Gerald Iversen, Alternatives'
National Coordinator.
Alternatives' web site -- www.SimpleLiving.org -- includes hundreds of
resources to read and download at no charge.
New resources include an audio CD version of its best known, most widely
read resource, the family Advent-Christmas booklet, "Whose Birthday Is
It,
Anyway?" for 2003. Now in its second decade, over two million copies of
the annual booklet have been distributed.
Also new is the audio CD "Living Simply and Loving It! -- People of faith
seeking, choosing and growing on the journey of integrity."
A new DVD called "The Vision of Simpler Living: Alternatives' Audio & Video
Collection" brings together two videos, "Have Yourself a Merry Little
Christmas" and "Break Forth into Joy: Beyond a Consumer Lifestyle" (with
Spanish for the first time), plus the new audio "Living Simply and Loving
It!"
A new series of greeting cards on 100% recycled paper called "Spirit
of
Simplicity" is a way to send a message of simplicity year 'round.
Alternatives' Honorary Board of Directors includes: DAVID BECKMAN,
President, Bread for the World; WALTER BRUEGGEMANN, Professor, Columbia
Theological Seminary; TONY CAMPOLO, author, speaker, educator, Eastern
University; MILLARD FULLER, Founder & President, Habitat For Humanity
International; ALISA GRAVITZ, Executive Director, Co-op America (publisher
of The National Green Pages); JOHN MCCONNELL, founder of Earthday; VICKI
ROBIN, author of "Your Money or Your Life" and Convener of The Simplicity
Forum; RONALD J. SIDER, President, Evangelicals for Social Action; BETSY
TAYLOR, Executive Director, Center for a New American Dream; and JIM
WALLIS, Executive Director, Sojourners Magazine, and Convener, Call to
Renewal.
Alternatives for Simple Living - or simply "Alternatives"- is a
nonprofit
organization whose mission is to "equip people of faith to challenge
consumerism, live justly, and celebrate responsibly." Started in 1973
as a
protest against the commercialization of Christmas, it now encourages
year-round conscientious living.
Alternatives published six editions of the Alternate Celebrations Catalog,
held the Best and Worst Christmas Gift Contest for many years, and produced
a quarterly magazine and three videos.
Throughout its 30-year history, Alternatives has helped lead the movement
to live more simply and faithfully. The many staff members and volunteers
of Alternatives have developed a wide variety of resources, organized an
annual Christmas Campaign, led numerous workshops, and reached countless
people with the message of simple, responsible living. Alternatives
emphasizes relationships and traditions over things, hoping to avoid stress
and debt, and promoting alternative giving - helping the truly needy
instead of spending so much on ourselves.
Alternatives' current catalog of resources includes both material produced
by Alternatives, and also books and other resources from other publishers,
all on simple living and related subjects, such as hunger, the environment,
media literacy, etc. Because Alternatives provides resources for Advent and
Christmas, Lent and Easter, weddings and other celebrations (some in
Spanish) for adults and children, Alternatives' motto is 'Resources for
responsibly living and celebrating since 1973.'
Alternatives is funded by grants, donations, memberships and sale of
resources. One needn't be a member to use our service. Memberships begin at
$25 per year and have numerous benefits.
Contact Alternatives anytime at www.SimpleLiving.org, PO Box 2787, Sioux

Millions Ready to Turn on Life During TV-Turnoff Week 2003
A single event this year has generated the support of over 70 important
national organizations, garnered praise from the Boys and Girls Clubs of
America as "a wonderful opportunity for families to reconnect," and
will
inspire millions of children and adults to lead a more active life.
TV-Turnoff Week 2003, April 21-27, is the only national celebration of the
low-TV lifestyle.
On average, American schoolchildren spend more time each year (over 1,000
hours) in front of the television set than in the classroom. The average
American will watch over nine years of television in his or her lifetime.
America's national television habit has significant negative impacts,
especially on children. We can measure these impacts in academic
underachievement, rising obesity, and splintered families. Indeed, given
these issues, it's small wonder that so many organizations support
TV-Turnoff Week.
Turning off television gives us a chance to think, read, create, and do. To
connect with our families and engage in our communities. To turn off TV and
turn on life. And that's why so many people get on board; TV-Turnoff Week
is spearheaded by the more than 16,000 local organizers who make the event
a celebration of life in their schools, communities, religious bodies, and
more.
Sound like fun? It is! Join millions of Americans and turn off your TV
during TV-Turnoff Week 2003 this April 21-27. Some practical ways to begin
include moving your TV to a less prominent place in your house -
especially, out of children's rooms -- keeping the television off during
dinner, or unsubscribing to cable and using the money for a monthly family
outing.
Or better yet, organize a TV-Turnoff Week. With help from TV-Turnoff
Network's Organizer's Kit, it's easy - and you'll be surprised at how much
fun you can have. As the National Mental Health Association wrote, "The
enthusiasm expressed by parents and children over the principles of
[TV-Turnoff Week] speak volumesŠ"
Or perhaps the words of Ben Loxley, a then-second grader who participated
in TV-Turnoff Week 2000, are even more appropriate: "I had a great time,
and my only questions isŠ why don't we turn off the TV for the other 51
weeks a year?"
For more information or to order an Organizer's Kit visit TV-Turnoff
Network on the Web at www.tvturnoff.org or call them at 202.518.5556.
TV-Turnoff Network encourages children and adults to watch much less
television to promote healthier families and communities. In addition to
TV-Turnoff Week, TV-Turnoff network organizes More Reading, Less TV, a
program that boosts reading enthusiasm among grammar school students.

Without realizing it, people you serve began preparing for another commercialized
Christmas last December 26th. Now's the time to begin planning a simpler,
alternative celebration.
We will help you. Contact us today.
Your Group Can Benefit from Customized Copies of "Whose Birthday Is It, Anyway?"
Place your order now for the 16th edition of "Whose Birthday Is It, Anyway?" for Advent 2003. This booklet is Alternatives' most widely read resource. Over two million copies have been circulated.
The featured writer for 2003 is Louis Lotz, Minister of Worship at Fair Haven Ministries, Hudsonville, Michigan. He is a widely published, award-winning author and columnist. One of his new reflections appears below.
Designed for families and small groups, "Whose Birthday...?" can be used in many settings -- at home, school, church. The content is new each year but the message is the same -- to equip people of faith to resist the pressures of a commercialized Christmas and to help them celebrate this season with greater integrity. As in the past, it contains Biblical reflections, articles, activities and ideas for alternative giving.
This resource is so well received, contains such valuable material and yet costs so little. We normally produce some 25 customized versions of "Whose Birthday...?" for various denominations and dioceses. We can also produce one for a group, a single congregation or others.
Partners have three pages inside and their name on the front and back covers. Alternatives provides free editorial help and promotion materials. We offer color on your pages and mail expediting. We'll be glad to give you details on the phone.
Copy is requested March 31st for June 1st delivery. Reservations are requested by August 15th for November 1st delivery. Minimum order for customization is 1000 copies at $.70 each.
Ecumenical, national catholic and most denominational versions will be in stock June 1st so that they can be distributed during summer events.

Whose Birthday Is It, Anyway? 2003
Sample Reflection by Louis Lotz
Christmas Eve -- Luke 2: 1-7
It is the greatest story ever told, and Luke tells it in a single sentence: She gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.
I wonder how Mary felt as she looked down at her newborn son, studying every hair on his little head, every crease in his face, listening to the sound of his breathing. I wonder if she understood the enormity of what had happened, and that she was holding in her arms God's own son, the Messiah for whom her people had waited for centuries.
I wonder what it was like in the stable. We imagine the stable to be soft and warm and bathed in a buttery glow. But all the barns I've been in were smelly, damp, and drafty. Farmers wear rubber barn boots when they go out to the barn, and you know why.
Jesus is born in the barn because there was no room for them in the inn. There was never any room for Jesus. No room in the inn for his birth. No room in the temple for his teachings. No room in the hearts of his countrymen for his gospel. He was always getting crowded out. The only place there was room for him was the cross; he had that all to himself.
In a department store window hereabouts there was a nativity scene: a half-dozen hay bales in a plywood manger, plastic shepherds and sheep, exotic wise men, Mary and Joseph, and a manger that looked like it was a high-school student's shop project.
There was no baby in the manger. Maybe they forgot to put him in. Maybe some practical joker was playing a prank. Maybe someone was making a theological statement. But the only thing in that manger was straw. I wonder what happened to the baby.
It does seem, sometimes, that the one thing that gets removed from our Christmas celebration is Christ himself. There are cards and carols, dinners and decorations, parties and presents, shopping and Santas, but no baby.
Don't let it happen to you this year. Make time for worship, prayer, and Bible reading. Talk with family members about how best to keep Christ in your Christmas. Keep checking the manger to make sure the baby is in there, lest when Christmas has come and gone you have nothing to show for it but tired feet and a pile of presents.
Let's Talk About It: Discuss with your children the plans and preparations
you made for their birth. As a family, talk about the kinds of plans and preparations
you want to make for Christ's coming next year.
Peace,
Gerald

EATING TO SAVE THE EARTH
Food Choices for a Healthy Planet
Linda Riebel and Ken Jacobsen
Factory farms, where crops are grown in huge plots, use massive amounts of artificial fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides. The runoff from these has created a Dead Zone in the Gulf of Mexico the size of New Jersey.
Our meat-heavy diet means that two thirds of agricultural land grows livestock feed. Conversion of native habitats to agriculture threatens species. One quarter of the world's mammal species and one eighth of bird species are threatened with extinction.
Three quarters of the world's food now comes from seven crops: wheat, rice, corn, potato, barley, cassava, and sorghum. In the United States 1,100 food species are endangered or threatened with extinction.
Commercial fishing has become so efficient that it has been called underwater strip-mining. The oceans are being emptied up to 150 times faster than forests are being cleared.
Food travels an average of 1,300 miles to reach the consumer. Consumption of fossil fuels by the agriculture industry causes one quarter of global warming.
It doesn't have to be this way.
Eating to Save the Earth shows you easy and healthful ways to choose and prepare foods with the Earth in mind. It also explains how to reduce waste, conserve water, and use less energy in preparing meals. The authors discuss composting, cleaning, recycling, and other activities after meals that affect our environment. They show us how to be Earth-friendly when eating away from home, whether at work, at play, or in restaurants. Best of all, they show that choices that are good for our health are also good for the planet. 105 pp. $10. ETSTE

ECO-ECONOMY
Building an Economy for the Earth
Lester R. Brown
In 1543, Polish astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus challenged the view that the Sun revolved around the Earth, arguing instead that the Earth revolved around the Sun. His paper led to a revolution in thinking - to a new worldview. Eco-Economy discusses the need today for a similar shift in our worldview. The urgent question: Is the environment part of the economy or the economy part of the environment? Lester Brown argues the latter, pointing out that treating the environment as part of the economy has produced an economy that is destroying its natural support systems.
Brown notes that if China were to have a car in every garage, American style, it would need 80 million barrels of oil a day - more than the world currently produces. If paper consumption per person in China were to reach the U.S. level, China would need more paper that the world produces. There go the world's forests. If the fossil fuel-based, automobile-centered, throwaway economic model will not work for China, it will not work for the other 3 billion people in the developing world - and it will not work for the rest of the world.
But Brown is optimistic as he describes how to restructure the global economy to make it compatible with the earth's ecosystem so that economic progress can continue. In the new economy, wind farms replace coal mines, hydrogen-powered fuel cells replace internal combustion engines, and cities are designed for people, not cars. Glimpses of the new economy can be seen in the wind farms of Denmark, the solar rooftops of Japan, the bicycle network of the Netherlands, and the reforested mountains of South Korea.
Eco-Economy is a road map of how to get from here to there.
