In face of an economic system and an advertising industry that pressure us, we CAN take control of our own buying patterns! We can beat this addiction of overconsumption day by day... and then share ideas of simpler living with others.

Let's say what overconsumption often represents--addiction. As any addiction, it is powerful. It takes great will power, faith, and the right tools to beat an addiction. The addiction of overconsumption is reinforced by our culture. It is encouraged, fed, promoted by peer pressure and by advertising. We are told it is patriotic to buy, that our economy depends on it, that we are ''worth it.'' We are worth much more than our stuff! It is not patriotic to destroy the Earth for ''economic growth''!

You go man!! Great Simpler Living Nudge !

This Month: Global Justice
This Week: Language

Our language shapes the way we think. Inclusive language opens us to more inclusive lives. Inclusive language may seem a little awkward because it feels new or different, not because it's wrong.

Some of the inclusive language gets silly though. Our pastor says things like ''God changed God's mind'' because she doesn't want to use the pronoun ''his,'' but she's afraid to call God a ''her.''

What do you propose? Use ''He'' half the time and ''She'' the rest of the time? Or can you relate to a genderless God?

Rita Swan
childrenshealthcare.org

Greetings, Rita,

I prefer using God instead of he/his or she/hers. I hope it makes the listener pay attention. I did that recently as lector. I use ''The Christ'' instead of he when appropriate.

In other cases using both works, for example, we're singing a spiritual Sunday that uses ''brother,'' so I suggested using ''brother'' in stanzas 1 & 3, ''sister'' in 2 & 4. The choir agreed.

Likewise, I have no trouble using Mother instead of Father (or alternating) in congregational hymns. I don't want to be obnoxious but I hope people hear me and make a note (pun intended).

Peace,
Jerry

Simplicity is not romanticizing poverty, monks, the Amish or people who struggled through the Great Depression. We only diminish those people's devotion or struggle, and we tend to try to make the journey of discipleship look silly or 'for others,' unrelated to us, untouchable. Poverty is NOT fun. Two thirds of the world population live in poverty involuntarily. We have a choice.

Excellent !! Thank you for a great nudge and thought for the day.

It takes 1000 gallons of water to produce one pound of aluminum. If your state does not have a deposit on beverage containers, petition your state representatives to require it. Reduce or cease using aluminum cans altogether. Both producing and recycling aluminum are financially and ecologically costly.

Excellent ! Excellent ! Excellent ! Thank you.
Rita Jean

Why is recycling aluminum costly?
Elysha

I've heard that tin cans are the most profitable to recycle compared to plastic and paper. Is there a difference between tin and aluminum on recycling? Which products come in tin cans and which in aluminum?

At church, home or office heat only the part of the building you are using, not the whole thing, with high efficiency space heaters.

Unfortunately, pianos and organs have to be kept within a certain temperature range 24/7. Also the 'high efficiency' space heaters that we bought are phenomenally expensive with the amount of electricity they use.

Consider using spot lighting rather than general lighting. Convert incandescent bulbs to LED or other high efficiency bulbs. Turn off incandescent lights whenever not in use; turn off fluorescent lights if you do not expect to return within an hour.

Put a bucket in your shower to catch the cold water while you're waiting for the hot. How many relatively easy uses can you think of for the water in the bucket besides watering your indoor plants?

Flushing the toilet. Getting new grass growing. Cleaning paint brushes. And onward!
Rita Jean

Hi Jerry,

Appreciate your Simpler Living nudges!

We use the bucket from the shower to flush the toilet in winter and water the vegetable garden in the growing season. We draw kitchen hot water into a watering pot for indoor plants. We use the motto, 'If it's yellow, let it mellow. If it's brown, flush it down.'

Tired of Being Guilted?
https://simplelivingworks.wordpress.com/2019/05/17/simpler-living-weekly-nudge-137/

May 24

Thank you so much, Gerald, for your piece below on not being guilted into supporting vet groups. I agree. I never support any organization which glorifies the military, and most vet organizations (to a slight extent even Veterans For Peace) hold up a willingness to kill as somehow being a good thing, even as they ask for money to counter the inevitable results of participating in war.

I have to disagree, though, with your contention that 'we can't avoid paying our taxes.' Of course we can! One of the best ways is, of course, by living simply! I'm surprised you did not make the connection. Altering one's income and lifestyle in order to remain below a taxable level is done by untold thousands of us, and, of course, is perfectly legal. But it is also possible to resist paying for war even if one 'owes' federal income tax. I have done that all my life. And there's a community of support for people who resist. See www.nwtrcc.org.

I hope you will relay that information to your readers.

Peace works,

Privilege could however be proactive to dismantle and transform the colonialist system of unfair taxation, systemic corporate war-racism, xenophobia, othering. Misogyny, blame-the-poor mentality for the seduction of consumerism and hoarding the abundance of creation. It is possible to give alms of temporary comfort, and change the system at the same time, instead of shaming with privilege's choice of temporary friendship. When Jesus encounters the lame man at Bethesda, the medical system at the time that benefited only those with helpers to get them into the healing pool, Jesus didn't sit down, hug him and offer him scripture. He gave him what he asked for, healing and forever commitment, and restored his dignity. He changed the system.

Non-conform Freely Celebration--Flag Day. Fly an Earth flag to show that our allegiance is first to Earth, then to a country, culture or civilization.

When the neighbor child comes to the door selling posters or overpriced holiday wrap, send a contribution directly to the person in charge at the school or church. That way, your contribution supports the program (not just a fraction of it after the fundraising company has its cut) and is tax deductible. Express your concern to the PTA or official that business interests may be taking advantage of the kids. Offer to help raise funds another more direct way.

In This Issue -- OverPopulation Update // Latest Podcast Episodes // FREE Daily NUDGE // Much More!

Hi, Gerri,
Thanks much for your ongoing emails. Today I had to sit through a long (way-too-long) sermon by a conservative guy at a 100 year anniversary at a Church where I served. He blamed the non-growth of our mainline Churches on the birth control pill. I wanted to stand up and shout at him, but knew that would not be the right response. Fortunately, some other people in the congregation were looking at their watches, confirming my feeling that he was much too windy. I'm sure they realized it, too. Your article linked to me in your email about U.S. population is very informative. I hope to use some of the facts presented there in my ongoing work to spread the real word about the need for control. Keep up the good work! Hope you and Rita are well.

When some folks retire, they build a new, larger house, 'just in case the kids come to visit.' When others retire it's to show the world what status they have achieved during their working years. Ask, 'How much space can we justify taking up now that we're alone?' Then downsize! Isn't it cheaper and MORE JUST to pay for motel rooms when the kids come than to maintain a palace for those few visits?

Imagine if everyone knew how to read. Twenty percent of the world is illiterate and almost two-thirds of the illiterate are women.

Take a moment to reflect on what reading means to you. What are some of your reading memories? How does reading contribute to your self-confidence, your ability to succeed, your joy, and your ability to learn?

Every September 8th, on International Literacy Day, Population Media Center (PMC) celebrates successes and acknowledge tremendous need. In some countries, literacy rates--from young adults to the elderly--are still well below 50 percent. Women are disproportionately illiterate. PMC focuses on girls' education because we know it's one of the best paths out of poverty and subservience. The United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal 4 includes literacy for all young people and the opportunity to learn how to read for all adults who are not literate. Everyone deserves the right to read. PMC's Work on Girls' Education

Is there any difference between watching a concert by the Three Tenors or a game at the Three Rivers stadium? Professional sports, movies and the fine arts may be on different spots on the entertainment continuum, but they're on the same line, as long as there's a passive audience. A Beethoven symphony is engaging to some. So is a hard fought hockey game. And they may represent the same thing... struggle between good and evil. Let's support the Arts by DOING the ARTS ... drawing, writing, dancing, reading aloud. If we feel incompetent, let's take a class. (Continued tomorrow)

Amateurs and professionals are on a continuum too. The difference is not between 'good' and 'bad' art and entertainment but between passivity and involvement. Passive entertainment makes money for somebody else, so it's promoted. Active entertainment takes no more time but takes our energy. 'The system' is designed primarily to keep us passive, to let professionals do the work while we pay them outrageous salaries. Non-conform freely. Reduce passive entertainment; increase active arts.

Simplicity is a disciplined life--disciplined, not punished or deprived or joyless. We are given great freedom to care about all of God's Creation, rather than nurturing the perversions and idols that our society has created and worships - our 'stuff.' Stuff exists to meet our needs. But if we spend our time, energy and money nurturing it instead of our relationships with God, others and ourselves, it will own us, control us and ultimately destroy us and the Earth.

So honestly, accurately, and simply said, Gerald. Thank you!
