Calls All to Celebrate Consumas, the REALLY Big Con!
Worshippers of Consumo, we have Alternatives!
Simpler Living Works! challenges Consumo.
Consumo, Overlord of Overconsumption, is being challenged this fall during the high holy season of Consumas, commonly mistaken for Christmas. Consumas - pronounced Con-SOOM-us - is The REALLY Big Con.
"Consumo is worshipped by almost everybody in North America," said Gerald Iversen of Simple Living Works! "Consumo appears in many guises, as a woman, a man, a child, even as Santa Claus. Consumo is the national god of North America, the god of US. The worshippers of Consumo exhibit an attitude based on fads and sex appeal, the lifestyle of the privileged. The followers of Consumo strive to live: and strive and strive and strive. The alternative is Simple Living."
"Almost everybody likes Simple Living. Even the worshippers of Consumo say they agree with Simple Living. But they think Simple Living is boring and they live according to Consumo. Simple Living is based on the joy of relationships, not the burden of stuff. It is supported by virtually all the major religions of the world. It is promoted by a small group of organizations and individuals who truly believe that the way of Consumo is destroying the world. Consumo is promoted by an incredibly wealthy and powerful advertising and entertainment industry.
"Simple Living Works! offers free tools to help people deal with 'Consumo' or 'Affluenza' or whatever we choose to call the North American addiction to overconsumption. These resources are at SimpleLivingWorks.org >> Archives.
"For ideas to overcome Consumo in your life and in our world, contact SimpleLivingWorks@yahoo.com. Or visit SimpleLivingWorks.org".
Consumo Must Go! is a free skit at SimpleLivingWorks.org >> archives.
Free seasonal resources appropriate for reevaluation of Christmas include collections of Christmas stories to read aloud or alone and Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas video. Let's Talk About Christmas! helps households plan in early Fall for the holidays instead of going on auto-pilot right after Thanksgiving. The Christmas Game gives people an easy, fun way to talk to each other, to tell their stories, instead of turning on TV.
The widely read resource is the annual booklet Whose Birthday Is It, Anyway? Two guidelines to help plan alternative fall events have been updated and reissued - How to Organize a Alternative Christmas Community Festival and Planning an Alternative Christmas Workshop.
The reissued Leader's Guide to the 'Unplug the Christmas Machine' Workshop, the companion to the classic Unplug the Christmas Machine helps leaders create a four hour workshop that helps participants clarify their beliefs and make realistic plans for more joyful, meaningful celebrations. Unplug the Christmas Machine: A Complete Guide to Putting Love & Joy Back into the Season gives thoughtful suggestions, creative exercises and answers to often-asked questions.
Resources for year-round simpler living include - Wedding Alternatives: A Guide to Planning Out-of-the-Ordinary Celebrations; the video Break Forth into Joy!: Beyond a Consumer Lifestyle; and Treasury of Celebrations, which helps create celebrations that truly reflect your values and don't cost the Earth.
Simple Living works! is an all-volunteer organization to equip people of faith to challenge consumerism, live justly, and celebrate responsibly since 1973. As the successor to Alternatives for Simple Living, we offer free resources on simpler living and related topics (such as hunger, the environment, media literacy, etc.) for Advent and Christmas, for Lent and Easter, for weddings and for year-round use - some in Spanish. We serve everyone, sell nothing and solicit no donations.
