Comment on Simpler Living Nudge

Jerry Iverson et al !! Can't keep a good man down! They named the die hard battery after you and your wonderful life mission of Simple Living ministries and messages. Thank you for keeping the hope alive for us all to never let go of trying to live more simply so others can simply live.
What a history making time we are now living in if only we had listened to the prophets of the last decades. I still have some really old, 10-20 year old news letters and sales fliers. You and your charming wife stayed with me in Raleigh about 15 years ago, right at the time you two were making a tour when someone in your family died as I remember.
Stay in Stay healthy, you are loved and a blessing to us in many ways.

ELCA-FaceBook 6/9/20 for SLW! Podcast Ep.0620
I am very fortunate to live in a rural area where we have access to farmers who sell meat and poultry directly to the public. One of our farmer friends has a little meat shop set up in a shed on premises... it's filled with freezers and has an honor box for payment. Another has similar arrangements, but you call for an appointment to shop. These farmers use smaller regional processors. So we have avoided the problems many consumers are experiencing buying protein, and our farmer friends have not had the issues of Big Ag farms killing livestock they couldn't sell...in fact, they can barely keep up with demand, and have gained a lot of new customers who didn't even know they existed even though they live in the same communities.
I know not everyone has the right logistics or financial freedom to do this, but... supporting local agriculture / small farmers when you can helps 'fight the power.' It's one of those things where there is very little that my household can do to change the character of the agricultural-industrial complex... but I can buy my food from my farmer neighbors when I can. It's a win-win. We also try to patronize markets that sell locally sourced / processed produce and artisanal foods. We don't do this perfectly, but we are pretty consistent. I would say that well over half of our groceries are local or regional; even more so during the growing season. About the only 'industrial food' we buy is processed food we can't get from local sources, and snacks/ convenience foods. Not a brag, but an encouragement. In Michigan, there is a handy booklet, also online reference, called Taste the Local Difference, that lists both farmers selling directly to. consumers, and retailers and restaurants that sell local foods. If you're in our state, Google it. Local Harvest is a nationwide listing of local food providers.

Re: Who Are the 'Looters'?

Didn't say ALL the demonstrators were looters or rioting. Burning buildings, turning over cars, breaking windows is rioting even if only by some. This is violence. It is not hypocrisy. Please stop the self righteousness.

Dear Gerald,
First of all, I want to thank you for all your diligence over the years in putting forth your newsletter and I'm aware that it is only the tip of the iceberg of all your efforts. I have been on your email list for about 20 years now and have gleaned many benefits from it. Over time, however, I feel that you have veered from your original mission of offering help and direction for those wanting to live simply and have taken on a very narrow political stance. I don't feel that positions such as recommending a Universal Income for each American is part of Alternatives' job. I believe that public policy is an organizational agenda item, not an item for someone seeking to address individuals who are in need of advice about their daily functions of life. For these reasons, I request that you unsubscribe me from your mailing list.
Thank you again for your years of service,
Rhonda
Thank you, Rhonda, for your thoughtful note. As a minister in the ELCA, the largest Lutheran denomination in the US, I began my focus on simple living in the early '80's when Rita and I read 'Living More with Less.' I have used its five Life Standards as the core of faith-based voluntary simplicity ever since. These five take simpler living far beyond the 'tips' approach of many simplicity bloggers today. I'd urge you to review the basic articles and videos on the SimpleLivingWorks.org site under About Us. The monthly eNews is one of seven publications I edit and distribute on the internet for social justice causes.
I'll post your email and my response in the letters section of the site. I'd be glad to hear from you again.
Peace,
Jerry
