Dear Friends,
I spent the 6 weeks of Lent going Room-by-Room through our home reconsidering things to give away. It ended up taking 2 weeks longer than I anticipated when I included the basement and garage. It then took 2 more weeks to figure out where to take all this stuff. Some were easy give-aways but many took some tedious research. I hope that this will save you some time. Especially check Donating Basics under #5 "HARD TO FIND HOMES" category. Here's a summary of what each room yielded and what I learned about donating items.:
Room-by-Room Plan - This lays out the master plan. Which rooms on which days; 1/2 hour a day.
Room-by-Room: Bedrooms 1 & 2 - Bedroom #1 is the master bedroom and mostly about donating clothes. Bedroom #2 is where a lot of our kids' memorabilia and awards were stored.
Room-by-Room: Bedrooms 3 & 4 & Bath - Since these are guest bedrooms they also stored memorabilia. The bathroom closet was the big challenge, especially sorting through old medications.
Room-by-Room: Living Room + Halls - Music: How many old cassette tapes and CDs are worth saving? Any? 5 insights from half way through the house.
Room-by-Room: Kitchen + Pantry - Lots of evaluating duplicates here. Learn about the 20/20 Rule.
Room-by-Room: Dining Room + Closets - Closets and bookshelves take more time to prune than functional space like where we actually eat.
Room-by-Room: 10 Lenten Lessons - 10 values and principles I learned during the 6 week purge, but I'm not finished.
Room-by-Room: Basement & Garage - Bigger items; Harder decisions about items that have been stored for decades like vinyl records, VHS tapes...
Donating Basics: Donating Basics - Where to take all the things you are willing to donate. I remind people about 4 traditional ways to give things away plus share my research on where to take 7 categories of what to do with "hard to donate" items. (You might want to save this post for reference.)
Fondly,
Susan
PS: To younger readers (20, 30, 40 year-olds) - You may not have accumulated much memorabilia. Heck, you may not have ever seen a VHS tape. Still, as you buy things you need (or maybe just like) think about the life span of your purchase and your interest. Re-use stuff.
PPS: For astute readers who know that a "Quarterly Report" means 3 months and this report obviously covers 4 months. Chill out. I wanted to give you the whole process without interruption.
PPPS: Stay tuned for "Recycling Basics" coming soon.
