DIY “WHOSE Birthday?”

The classic Advent/Christmas resource Whose Birthday Is It, Anyway? is available in multiple formats in 2015 to meet your personal, family and community needs. Whose Birthday? 2010 was the last edition distributed on paper. Since then I have published it on the internet.

Whose Birthday? #27 is a new, free online collection. Use as much as you need in print or online. Also, contribute your art and articles to SLW! for it. The 2015 ed. is scheduled to be on our website in late Sept. When it’s ready, I’ll announce it in the Simple Living Works! weekly blog and monthly eNews.

Whose Birthday? #16 is scheduled for release as a SLW! podcast series late this fall. This legacy resource can also be used as text or audio. It’s calendar matches the lectionary cycle (C).

DIY Whose Birthday? Yes, you can produce our own customized, do-it-yourself Whose Birthday? You’re welcome to assemble and copy a version that meets your local needs. All of our resources and service are now free of charge.

  • CREATE – select the items most appropriate for your congregation or group, including graphics. Add some of your own original material if you choose.
  • PRODUCE – assemble the items in an attractive way, using publishing software (probably already on your computer) for a paper version; or electronic software for internet-based version (using PDF’s of a paper version or a template for a newsletter version).
  • DISTRIBUTE – Hand out copies to your congregation or group at a worship service or meeting or by mail, make additional copies available to share with friends and relatives. Do not sell for a profit or copyright it under our Creative Commons license.  Post it on your congregation’s or your personal web site.

Although Alternatives closed officially in early 2011, its mission and resources are being extended since then by Simple Living Works! An important document written around that time is Kristina Kahl’s Ph.D. dissertation. It is also a cautionary tale. In this episode the author speaks.

Hi Jerry,
It is good to see that you are keeping the organization – at least the materials – alive and well.
Dissertations are a very big endeavor. And as you know, I spent many a year with the organization so as to produce such a product.
That being said, this is a project that uses a sociological mindset. Again, another perspective that gets misunderstood. Most people align it with psychology. Not the case. Sociology looks at how people and society interact. It is more of the nature vs nurture argument – sociology being the nurture. Anyway, I hope you enjoy the dissertation. I worked really hard on it and feel it offers a strong qualitative account of simple living, the relationship between faith based beliefs and simple living, as well as the role a national organization played in the larger conversation of simple living.
Please note that I have also used pseudonyms for the organization and all people I interviewed.
I would love feedback!
Best,
Kristina

Part 4. Rites of Passage, such as birthdays, anniversaries and funerals

Wedding Alternatives: Create Celebrations That Reflect Your Values and Don’t Cost the Earth (Angela and Pete, above, contributors to Wedding Alternatives Supplement)

Treasury Intro: SLW! podcast episode 4 (the need to simplify all our celebrations)

Rites of passage are rituals or celebrations that mark the passage of a person through the life cycle, from one stage to another, from one role or social position to another. In the pre-modern world, these rites served at least four functions: Safe passage | Moments of learning | Connection to community | Transformation experiences

The place of rites in modern society

Resist the pressures of the consumer society and observe the rites in ways that enable you to recover the renewing and maturing power they are intended to have by focusing on the following:

  • People, instead of the gifts and other paraphenalia used to aid or celebrate the transition.
  • Values and ideals, instead of mindlessly celebrating to anesthetize the person(s) to the trauma of transition.
  • Community, instead of the consumer culture’s narcissistic privatization of life transitions.
  • Change. Rites help people visualize the desired outcome of the passage and to see themselves on the other side — occasions of transformation.

Creating our own rituals

Although some of life is logical, much of life is not. Even when we are young we come to understand that life is full of mystery. Without rituals and ceremonies within our communities and families, we feel adrift and cannot understand why.

Overview of Rites of Passage (alphabetical, not chronological order)

Wedding Alternatives, which also has been published as the Alternative Wedding Book includes:

The original version is available free online, including a more recent supplement. The book version, called The Alternative Wedding Book, is still in-print from Woodlake/NorthStone Publishing, BC, Canada.

It you think this resource may be out-of-date, read this testimonial for Alternative Wedding Book that I received in late 2013, signed Arizona Bride.

Inspired by Arizona Bride, we’ve added a line for Tithe in the Wedding Budget. The couple included 10% of their wedding budget as a charitable contribution for environmental causes.

She plans to continue giving the book to friends who are preparing to wed. By the way, it’s available free and complete as Wedding Alternatives at SimpleLivingWorks.org; also in Spanish as Nuestra Boda.

I hope you’ll find my blog Occupying the Flagstaff Bridal Fair both humorous and enlightening.

And I’ve added Meredith Gould’s helpful book Getting #Married: Using Social Media to Celebrate the Sacred to the Wedding Alternatives Supplement.

I hope that you can see the values of these free resources and will use them as needed, or even better, acquaint yourself with them now so that you’re prepared for your next event.
