Episode one of the two-part series is based on Walter Brueggemann’s six theses about money & possessions in the Bible; episode two is a brief survey of the theme of money and possessions throughout the Bible.

The Bible is rich with complex and diverse material on the topic of money and possessions. Indeed, a close look at many scriptural texts reveals that economics is a core preoccupation of the biblical tradition. In this new work, highly regarded preacher and scholar Walter Brueggemann explores the recurring theme of money and possessions in the Old and New Testaments. He proposes six theses concerning money and possessions in the Bible, observing their contradictory nature to the conventional wisdom and practice of both the ancient world and today’s society. Brueggemann advises us to reassess the ways in which our society engages—or does not engage—questions of money and possessions as carriers of social possibility. He invites the church to move toward an alternative neighborly economy that is more consistent with the gospel we confess.

Essential Reading! — Contents, Series Foreword, Foreword (Richard Horsely), Preface, Introduction (Chapter One) — available free online.

Lee Van Ham’s From Egos to Eden: Our Heroic Journey to Keep Earth Livable

  1.  This book is the 2nd of three in the series, “Eden for the 21st Century.” How does the content of this book fit into that series?
  2.   The book agrees with those who say that the current crises are beyond anything our species has ever faced. What is it about our current moment that makes it so daunting?
  3.   As your subtitle indicates, the book’s overall structure follows the sequence of a mythic heroic journey. How does that journey fit our task of keeping our planet livable?
  4.   You attach a lot of importance to the experience of Call. Do you believe that our entire human species is being called to this heroic journey? What is the importance of speaking about our response to Earth’s ecological crises as a Call?
  5.   Quite a few First Peoples speak in your book—especially in the “Foreword” (written by a Hau-den-o-SAU-ne woman) and in Chapter Seven where First Peoples are considered mentors and partners in OneEarth living. What is happening among Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples that make their voices important to our heroic journey?
  6.   It’s apparent that Carl Jung, the Swiss psychiatrist, has been important to how you understand our abilities as humans to move beyond what we’ve yet achieved. What is it about Jung that makes him so helpful in solving our ecological and civilizational crises?
  7.   You speak about this as an apocalyptic time. Why do you find it helpful to speak of apocalypse? Many use that word to describe catastrophe.
  8.   Every heroic journey is a quest for a treasure. What is the treasure that our heroic journey seeks in order to solve the crises we’re in?
  9.   You join with Thomas Berry, the late “geologian,” and others in believing that we humans are capable of moving beyond greed, acquisitiveness, and domination and actually create a world beyond our current crises. On what do you base such belief?
  10.  Heroic journeys take us on life-threatening adventures, but finally we arrive “home.” What does home look like in our journey from egos to Eden?

James Howard Kunstler (born October 19, 1948) is an American author, social critic, public speaker, and blogger. He is best known for his books The Geography of Nowhere (1994), a history of American suburbia and urban development; The Long Emergency (2005); and most recently, Too Much Magic (2012). In The Long Emergency, he argues that declining oil production is likely to result in the end of industrialized society as we know it and force Americans to live in smaller-scale, localized, agrarian (or semi-agrarian) communities. Starting with World Made by Hand in 2008, Kunstler has written a series of science fiction novels about such a culture in the future.

He graduated from the State University of New York, Brockport campus, worked as a reporter and feature writer for a number of newspapers, and finally as a staff writer for Rolling Stone Magazine. In 1975, he dropped out to write books on a full-time basis. He has no formal training in architecture or the related design fields.

Kunstler lectures on topics related to suburbia, urban development, and the challenges of what he calls “the global oil predicament”, and a resultant change in the “American Way of Life.” He has lectured at the TED Conference, the American Institute of Architects, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the International Council of Shopping Centers, the National Association of Science and Technology, as well as at numerous colleges and universities, including Yale, MIT, Harvard, Cornell, University of Illinois, DePaul, Texas A & M, the USMA, and Rutgers University.

As a journalist, Kunstler continues to write for The Atlantic Monthly, Slate.com, RollingStone, The New York Times Sunday Magazine, and its op-ed page where he often covers environmental and economic issues. Kunstler is also a leading supporter of the movement known as “New Urbanism.”

Ugly Food Facts

40% of food in America goes to waste in fields, gardens, stores, restaurants, schools.

√ Ugly produce may actually be healthier than pretty food. Some imperfect, cracked fruit may contain more antioxidants.

France now requires supermarkets to give away unsold food.

Tip

√ Carrying a reusable “take home” container in our cars saves left-overs from our restaurant meals and keeps more single-use containers out of the landfill.

We do not solicit or accept donations, nor do we sell anything. All our resources and services are free of charge. We’re an all-volunteer organization. Instead, we urge Alternative Giving. Give away 25% of what you spent last year on all celebrations – Christmas, birthdays, etc. — to local, national and international causes.
