The Common Good Podcast Ep. 92: For Black History Month, author of the new “Light, Bright, Damn Near White: Stories and Reflections of a Multi-Racial Black Man’s Battle with Racism in America” on the power of white in a multi-color humanity

The person we interview in this episode has written a powerful book that we hope you’ll consider your assigned reading for February, Black History Month. After you listen to Richard Lawrence, you’ll want to read his story in the newly released, “Light, Bright, Damn Near White.”

The power of white affects so many actions and policies. With racist meanness in the news frequently, Richard Lawrence really helps us think about how we have been favored or oppressed by whiteness.

As a campus minister when Selma rocketed into national news, Richard traveled there with students. Later he served a congregation on Chicago’s southside from which he worked with Operation P.U.S.H (Jesse Jackson) and headed a project that attracted Martin Luther King, Jr., to join in a strategic demonstration. More recently, Richard has worked tirelessly on affordable housing. His entire life has been dedicated to the work of social justice. Having recently become part of the San Diego Jubilee Circle, he works for ecological and economic justice that aims for nothing less than living within the limits of our one planet.

Scheduled for mid-February is Richard Heinberg of the Post-Carbon Institute. Future episodes of Simpler OneEarth Living feature educator and author Mark Burch; Don Hall of Transitions USA; and Susan Taylor of Just Financial Advisors on her new book “What About Our Money.”

Why should war mobilize us more fervently than working against aggressive powers destroying Earth’s livability?
