Friends of the Third World, digging at the roots of poverty since 1972, a Fair Trade shop and training center in Fort Wayne, IN.
In addition to job-training for needy people in Fort Wayne, the house of the Friends of the Third World helps sell products made by exceptional enterprising groups in the Third World, including the Bombolulu Workshop for the Handicapped in Mombasa, Kenya, as well as trying to help Nicaraguan Medical Aid.
Friends of the Third World (FOTW) began in 1972 when students and teachers formed a fundraising project to aid the hungry. FOTW currently operates job training programs at its building in Fort Wayne and markets handmade crafts from 80 partner groups in 35 countries. A most recent financial report shows that almost 80% of the sales price of an item goes back in the form of fair trade payments to the producers. Three paid staff supervise volunteers who contributed more than $100,000 worth of donated labor in the past year.

Glen Gersmehl’s efforts for justice and peace were shaped by seven year’s work with older people in NY City’s highest poverty and crime areas. It led to his extensive involvement in organizing and advocacy efforts. Another focus for Glen has been sharing what he has learned about organizing and social change. He has led 800 workshops and taught nine college courseson peace and justice concerns; he also directed a university peace studies program, an in-service teacher training program for 60 schools, and the nation’s largest community leadership training center. Among many widely-admired educational resources he has developed are participatorycomputer-based activities used by a million people. Such peacemaking skills and experience led to his being chosen as the U.S. delegate to international meetings held in India to plan the UNDecade for Peace, the largest peace education (substitute “such”) program in UN history.
Articles by Glen or about his work have appeared in scores of publications from The NY Times to thePeace Chronicle, and his numerous media appearances include interviews on NPR’s “All Things Considered” and many TV news programs. He serves as national coordinator for Lutheran Peace Fellowship and the Peace & Justice Resource Center, and received a community service award for his conflict prevention work with the homeless. Glen has presented testimony or worked as a consultant for 20 government agencies and legislative committees, and has been asked to take on leadership roles in projects ranging from the arms trade (Federation of American Scientists)and nuclear proliferation (United Nations), to chemical weapons (U.S. Senate) and social service policy (a major White House conference).
